What did the Europeans Learn and Yet from the Crusades?
You may not think about this but the Franks learnt a lot from the Crusades. They learnt and brought back a lot of things from the Muslims and Jerusalem. The main things were:
Language
The Crusaders learnt some arabic words that they could use to get resorces such as sugar, arsenal, syrup, lemon, admiral and algebra.
New Products
They brought new products which influence us now. Basicaly, if they had not brought some things back we might not have them today. Some included, lemons, melons, apricots, cotton, spices, slippers and glass mirrors.
Knowledge
The Crusaders learnt a lot of things and brought them back so everyone could know them. Some knew knowledge they had was:
Science (magnetic compass)
Medicine (treating inguries better)
Geography (map making)
Mathematics (new number system)
Fighting and Castle Building
In a way the Crusades did 'steal' some ideas and ways of the Saracens. For example, the Saracens used many archers while fighting and the Europeans (especially the English) started to develope their archers and bring in a larger number of them to train. The Saracens had better, strong, defensive castles which was a series of round towers and thick, strong walls to connect them all. These castles were copied and disigned when the crusaders returned to their homes.
Now just remember:
1. A Pilgrim is a person who carries out a journey to a special place. Usually to do with religious significance. So a Pilgrimage is a journey to a special place or a place with religious significance.
2. The word CRUSADES means .....
"WARS OF THE CROSS!"
